Alabama puts this rule in the hands of its Department of Revenue, under sections 32-7A and 32-7B of the Code. The policy must be an Alabama policy from a company qualified to issue motor vehicle liability insurance in the state, so a policy written elsewhere is not presented as enough on that page. When the department determines that a vehicle was not insured as the law requires, it suspends the registration. Reinstating costs $200 after a first violation and $400 after later ones, and the owner must also show proof of current liability insurance. The law also accepts a liability bond or a deposit of cash in place of a policy. The page does not give a period for any later filing, so we state none. The three limits themselves match the 25/50/25 pattern shared by many states in our table.

What the three numbers mean in Alabama

This is the most common pattern among the states we read, shared with 11 others, so a policy from one of them normally fits without change.

$25,000 is the most the policy pays for one injured person. $50,000 is the most it pays for everyone hurt in the crash. $25,000 is the most it pays for the other car and anything else you damage.

Not verified means that we did not read the rule on an official page. It does not mean that the rule is absent, and we do not infer at-fault status from silence. Ask the state before relying on a blank.

Questions people ask

What is the minimum car insurance in Alabama?

Alabama requires liability limits of at least $25,000 for injury to one person, $50,000 per accident for injuries, and $25,000 for property damage, written 25/50/25. We read these figures on an official state page on November 2, 2026. Other coverages may apply: see what we could verify on this page, and confirm with the state.

Is 25/50/25 enough coverage in Alabama?

It is the legal floor, not a measure of risk. If one person's injuries cost $75,000, a $25,000 limit leaves $50,000 that can be claimed from you personally. Enter your own scenario in the tool above to see the amount. This is arithmetic on your figures, not insurance advice.

What else does Alabama require or enforce besides these limits?
