Iowa's two sources sit side by side. The Insurance Division lists $20,000 for one person, $40,000 per accident and $15,000 for property, which makes Iowa and Hawaii the only states in our table with a 20/40 injury floor. Iowa Code section 321.20B then says a person may not drive on the highways unless financial liability coverage is in effect and the card is in the vehicle; a car registered in another state needs other evidence of coverage. The section ties the offense to a scheduled fine set in section 805.8A, and we did not read that amount, so we do not quote it. It also provides for impoundment in some cases, with release on proof of coverage and payment of any fine, towing and storage. An impounded car left unclaimed for thirty days can be treated as abandoned. That thirty-day clock is the detail most worth noting.

What the three numbers mean in Iowa

Iowa sits at the low end of what we read: 33 states ask for more per person. A policy bought here at the floor can fall short the day its owner moves away.

$20,000 is the most the policy pays for one injured person. $40,000 is the most it pays for everyone hurt in the crash. $15,000 is the most it pays for the other car and anything else you damage.

Questions people ask

What is the minimum car insurance in Iowa?

Iowa requires liability limits of at least $20,000 for injury to one person, $40,000 per accident for injuries, and $15,000 for property damage, written 20/40/15. We read these figures on an official state page on November 2, 2026. Other coverages may apply: see what we could verify on this page, and confirm with the state.

Is 20/40/15 enough coverage in Iowa?

It is the legal floor, not a measure of risk. If one person's injuries cost $60,000, a $20,000 limit leaves $40,000 that can be claimed from you personally. Enter your own scenario in the tool above to see the amount. This is arithmetic on your figures, not insurance advice.
