South Dakota's limits sit in section 32-35-70 of its Codified Laws: $25,000 for one person, $50,000 for two or more people and $25,000 for property in any one accident, with cover that must apply in the United States and Canada. That is the most common pattern in our table. Section 32-35-113 requires every driver or owner to keep financial responsibility in force at all times, by a policy, a bond, a $50,000 deposit of money or securities, or self-insurance, and failing to do so is a Class 2 misdemeanor. The section gives no fine amount, so we state none. Section 58-11-9 adds uninsured and hit-and-run motorist cover to every policy, at the same bodily injury limits as the liability cover, though the requirement stops at $100,000 per person and $300,000 per accident unless the buyer asks for more. A policy may also leave out liability cover if the holder certifies in writing that the vehicle will not be driven during the policy period.

What the three numbers mean in South Dakota

This is the most common pattern among the states we read, shared with 11 others, so a policy from one of them normally fits without change.

$25,000 is the most the policy pays for one injured person. $50,000 is the most it pays for everyone hurt in the crash. $25,000 is the most it pays for the other car and anything else you damage.

Not verified means that we did not read the rule on an official page. It does not mean that the rule is absent, and we do not infer at-fault status from silence. Ask the state before relying on a blank.

Questions people ask

What is the minimum car insurance in South Dakota?

South Dakota requires liability limits of at least $25,000 for injury to one person, $50,000 per accident for injuries, and $25,000 for property damage, written 25/50/25. We read these figures on an official state page on November 3, 2026. Other coverages may apply: see what we could verify on this page, and confirm with the state.

Is 25/50/25 enough coverage in South Dakota?

It is the legal floor, not a measure of risk. If one person's injuries cost $75,000, a $25,000 limit leaves $50,000 that can be claimed from you personally. Enter your own scenario in the tool above to see the amount. This is arithmetic on your figures, not insurance advice.
