South Carolina writes both rules into the same chapter. Section 38-77-140 sets $25,000 for one person, $50,000 for two or more and $25,000 for property, and section 38-77-150 says no policy may be issued without an uninsured motorist provision, which must include at least $25,000 for property, with an optional $200 exclusion. Title 56, Chapter 10 handles lapses. Registration and plates are suspended until proper proof is provided and a $200 reinstatement fee is paid, and a per diem fine of $5 is added under section 56-10-245. Someone who wilfully fails to return the plates and registration commits a misdemeanor, with $100 to $200 or 30 days for a first offense. Chapter 77 also names the SR-22 as a mandatory filing a government authority can require, though we did not read a period for it. Giving false evidence of insurance is a misdemeanor as well.

What the three numbers mean in South Carolina

This is the most common pattern among the states we read, shared with 11 others, so a policy from one of them normally fits without change.

$25,000 is the most the policy pays for one injured person. $50,000 is the most it pays for everyone hurt in the crash. $25,000 is the most it pays for the other car and anything else you damage.

Not verified means that we did not read the rule on an official page. It does not mean that the rule is absent, and we do not infer at-fault status from silence. Ask the state before relying on a blank.

Questions people ask

What is the minimum car insurance in South Carolina?

South Carolina requires liability limits of at least $25,000 for injury to one person, $50,000 per accident for injuries, and $25,000 for property damage, written 25/50/25. We read these figures on an official state page on November 2, 2026. Other coverages may apply: see what we could verify on this page, and confirm with the state.

Is 25/50/25 enough coverage in South Carolina?

It is the legal floor, not a measure of risk. If one person's injuries cost $75,000, a $25,000 limit leaves $50,000 that can be claimed from you personally. Enter your own scenario in the tool above to see the amount. This is arithmetic on your figures, not insurance advice.

What else does South Carolina require or enforce besides these limits?

South Carolina writes both rules into the same chapter. Section 38-77-140 sets $25,000 for one person, $50,000 for two or more and $25,000 for property, and section 38-77-150 says no policy may be issued without an uninsured motorist provision, which must include at least $25,000 for property, with an optional $200 exclusion.
