The District's chapter is titled Compulsory/No-Fault Motor Vehicle Insurance, but personal injury protection is an option here. Section 31-2406 sets $25,000 per person, $50,000 per accident and $10,000 for property, and adds mandatory uninsured motorist cover of 25/50 with $5,000 for property and a $200 deductible on that property part. Insurers must offer personal injury protection under section 31-2404, with medical benefits of at least $50,000 and work loss of at least $12,000, paid without regard to fault. A victim who elects those benefits must tell the insurer within 60 days and may then sue only under the conditions of section 31-2405. Penalties in section 31-2413 include a civil fine of $500 or up to 30 days of suspension for a first driving offense. A lapse costs $150 per vehicle for 1 to 30 days, then $7 a day, up to $2,500.

What the three numbers mean in District of Columbia

The figure to watch here is the last one: $10,000 of property cover is thin against the price of one late-model car, whatever the injury limits say.

$25,000 is the most the policy pays for one injured person. $50,000 is the most it pays for everyone hurt in the crash. $10,000 is the most it pays for the other car and anything else you damage.

Questions people ask

What is the minimum car insurance in District of Columbia?

District of Columbia requires liability limits of at least $25,000 for injury to one person, $50,000 per accident for injuries, and $10,000 for property damage, written 25/50/10. We read these figures on an official state page on November 2, 2026. Other coverages may apply: see what we could verify on this page, and confirm with the state.

Is 25/50/10 enough coverage in District of Columbia?

It is the legal floor, not a measure of risk. If one person's injuries cost $75,000, a $25,000 limit leaves $50,000 that can be claimed from you personally. Enter your own scenario in the tool above to see the amount. This is arithmetic on your figures, not insurance advice.

What else does District of Columbia require or enforce besides these limits?
