Maine's minimum comes from Title 29-A, section 1605, since the state insurance bureau's site refused our reader. It sets $50,000 for one person, $100,000 for an accident with more than one injured person and $25,000 for property, which puts Maine with Alaska, North Carolina and Virginia at the top of our table on injury. The same section goes further than those three on what we read: it also sets $2,000 for medical payments under section 1605-A and $500 for towing and storage under section 1605-B. So a policy matching the three usual numbers can still fall short of the list in this section. Someone arriving from a 25/50 state has to double both injury lines. The section also lets a utility qualify by showing financial ability, which will not concern a private driver. We did not read Maine's penalty section.

What the three numbers mean in Maine

No state we read asks for more per person than Maine. A driver arriving with a 25/50 policy from elsewhere falls short here and has to raise the limits at once.

$50,000 is the most the policy pays for one injured person. $100,000 is the most it pays for everyone hurt in the crash. $25,000 is the most it pays for the other car and anything else you damage.

Not verified means that we did not read the rule on an official page. It does not mean that the rule is absent, and we do not infer at-fault status from silence. Ask the state before relying on a blank.

Questions people ask

What is the minimum car insurance in Maine?

Maine requires liability limits of at least $50,000 for injury to one person, $100,000 per accident for injuries, and $25,000 for property damage, written 50/100/25. We read these figures on an official state page on November 2, 2026. Other coverages may apply: see what we could verify on this page, and confirm with the state.

Is 50/100/25 enough coverage in Maine?

It is the legal floor, not a measure of risk. If one person's injuries cost $150,000, a $50,000 limit leaves $100,000 that can be claimed from you personally. Enter your own scenario in the tool above to see the amount. This is arithmetic on your figures, not insurance advice.

What else does Maine require or enforce besides these limits?
