North Dakota's insurance department lists more required lines than most. Beyond $25,000 per person, $50,000 per accident and $25,000 for property, it requires uninsured and underinsured motorist bodily injury cover at 25/50 and basic no-fault personal injury protection of $30,000 per person. It states that this applies to all registered vehicles. That no-fault amount is three times Hawaii's and twice Oregon's, making it the largest required figure of its kind among states whose requirement we read at a stated amount, apart from New York's $50,000. Chapter 26.1-41 of the state code contains the no-fault rules, and its definition of serious injury includes death, dismemberment, disability beyond sixty days and medical expenses above $2,500. Check the chapter itself before applying it to a case. A driver arriving from elsewhere cannot assume matching the three familiar numbers is enough. The department's list sits in a page on business insurance, and it names private passenger vehicles too.

What the three numbers mean in North Dakota

This is the most common pattern among the states we read, shared with 11 others, so a policy from one of them normally fits without change.

$25,000 is the most the policy pays for one injured person. $50,000 is the most it pays for everyone hurt in the crash. $25,000 is the most it pays for the other car and anything else you damage.

Questions people ask

What is the minimum car insurance in North Dakota?

North Dakota requires liability limits of at least $25,000 for injury to one person, $50,000 per accident for injuries, and $25,000 for property damage, written 25/50/25. We read these figures on an official state page on November 2, 2026. Other coverages may apply: see what we could verify on this page, and confirm with the state.

Is 25/50/25 enough coverage in North Dakota?

It is the legal floor, not a measure of risk. If one person's injuries cost $75,000, a $25,000 limit leaves $50,000 that can be claimed from you personally. Enter your own scenario in the tool above to see the amount. This is arithmetic on your figures, not insurance advice.
