Virginia's limits have stepped up in stages, and section 46.2-472 shows it: older text at 30/60 sits beside the current figures of $50,000 per person, $100,000 per accident and $25,000 for property. That places Virginia with Alaska, Maine and North Carolina at the top of the injury lines we read. The section also says the policy must apply in the Commonwealth, in any other state and in Canada. Section 46.2-706 sets out what happens to an uninsured owner: the Commissioner suspends the license, all registration certificates and plates until the person pays a noncompliance fee of $600 and furnishes proof of financial responsibility. A $25,000 property line is common, so most arrivals need only change the first two numbers. We looked for FR-44 on the Virginia pages we read and did not find it, so this page says nothing about it.

What the three numbers mean in Virginia

No state we read asks for more per person than Virginia. A driver arriving with a 25/50 policy from elsewhere falls short here and has to raise the limits at once.

$50,000 is the most the policy pays for one injured person. $100,000 is the most it pays for everyone hurt in the crash. $25,000 is the most it pays for the other car and anything else you damage.

Not verified means that we did not read the rule on an official page. It does not mean that the rule is absent, and we do not infer at-fault status from silence. Ask the state before relying on a blank.

Questions people ask

What is the minimum car insurance in Virginia?

Virginia requires liability limits of at least $50,000 for injury to one person, $100,000 per accident for injuries, and $25,000 for property damage, written 50/100/25. We read these figures on an official state page on November 2, 2026. Other coverages may apply: see what we could verify on this page, and confirm with the state.

Is 50/100/25 enough coverage in Virginia?

It is the legal floor, not a measure of risk. If one person's injuries cost $150,000, a $50,000 limit leaves $100,000 that can be claimed from you personally. Enter your own scenario in the tool above to see the amount. This is arithmetic on your figures, not insurance advice.

What else does Virginia require or enforce besides these limits?

Virginia's limits have stepped up in stages, and section 46.2-472 shows it: older text at 30/60 sits beside the current figures of $50,000 per person, $100,000 per accident and $25,000 for property. That places Virginia with Alaska, Maine and North Carolina at the top of the injury lines we read.
