Maryland's rule is about keeping cover without any gap. Transportation Article section 17-103 sets $30,000 for one person, $60,000 for two or more and $15,000 for property, with interest and costs on top. Section 17-106 then suspends the registration automatically when required security lapses, effective no later than 60 days after notice of the lapse, until proof of security and any penalty fee are in. The penalty is $200 per vehicle for 1 to 30 days, rising by $7 a day from day 31, and it cannot pass $3,500 for each violation in a 12-month period. Within 48 hours of being notified, the owner must surrender the evidence of registration, or the license itself may be suspended. At these rates a 90-day lapse costs $620. The figure is our arithmetic on the statute, so check it against any notice you receive.

Questions people ask

What is the minimum car insurance in Maryland?

Maryland requires liability limits of at least $30,000 for injury to one person, $60,000 per accident for injuries, and $15,000 for property damage, written 30/60/15. We read these figures on an official state page on November 2, 2026. Other coverages may apply: see what we could verify on this page, and confirm with the state.

Is 30/60/15 enough coverage in Maryland?

It is the legal floor, not a measure of risk. If one person's injuries cost $90,000, a $30,000 limit leaves $60,000 that can be claimed from you personally. Enter your own scenario in the tool above to see the amount. This is arithmetic on your figures, not insurance advice.
